Report by Mark Maslen - Secretary - New Star Ashton

Saturday 21st July

On what was the day after the floods in Gloucester and Tewkesbury, we all set off for Walsall. By the time we reached these areas, the conditions were really poor. With everyone making their own way, mobile phones started ringing and at one point everyone was thinking of abandoning the trip and travelling back home. In the end, it was decided to persevere and eventually we made it to the venue.

Dominic Nelson was first to compete. Having three others in is pool; he won two fights, one by Ippon and one by Yuko, to put himself in the semi-final. He fought his best but lost giving him a Bronze medal.

Lucy Monks was up next. Drawn in a very strong group she fought well in her first fight but lost and then in her second fight, she had to withdraw through an injury.

Natasha & Rebecca Maslen were the final pair to take to the mats. Both in the same weight group and both carrying injuries had four fights each. Natasha lost her first and then her final fight to Rebecca ending up with a Bronze medal. She did win two fights by Ippon.

Rebecca won all her fights by Ippon, to take the Gold medal.

A good day for the club after a difficult start, but the journey home was a lot smoother.

Well done to all and especially to the parents whom persevered with the driving conditions to get the children there safely.
