British Judo Awards Volunteer of the Year 2024
British Judo volunteer of the year 2024 was our own Club Chair, Zoe Locke!
Zoe joins the Patchway hall of fame of volunteer award winners, along with the whole club winning club of the year 2024 (and 2012).
The clubs volunteer ethos is passed through out the club, Locke family we can currently boast three generations of volunteers, Zoe’s father in law, husband and children all volunteering at our club.
Zoe works tirelessly in the background in numerous ways, supported by a great team and ensuring the clubs ethos of being a family club to develop players to be the best they can be! Not just about medals, it’s also about personal development!
Our young volunteers are inspiring, all of the role modelling to younger players. Amelia was shortlisted to last three of the national young volunteer award, at just 12 she has written a judo grading system for our under 5 players, along with supporting our mini session and in particular Millie, who has been bling since birth; she even made her a braille birthday card!

Masterclass with Olympian Lele Nairne
Great to be able to host a second Master class with 2024 Olympian Lele Nairne.
Lele put players through their paces, with skills and drills. Giving players aged 7 to 69 a chance to do randori (free practice) with her.
Lele is an inspiration to all players, many of whom have also had the chance to be coached by Lele several times at the annual Western area judo camp.
Lele gave out star of the day award to Millie on our minis session and Chase and Anna were awarded judoka of the week certificates on our junior session.

Not just for boys!
40% of our players are female!
Three of our eight coaches are female!
Four of our seven junior coaches are female!
Five of our seven officials / referees are female!
Western Area Camp
Two coaches, Alison and Sophie along with seven players (all who are also club junior coaches) attended the 15th John Davies Western area and England camp from 4-8 August.
The camp first started in 2009, when five Patchway players attended, there were 22 altogether, from England and Germany. This year there were 88 players staying at camp, with over 20 attending day sessions throughout the week. Players came from all over England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France and Czech Republic.
Players were put in teams of 11, with a team captain, team mentor and allocated coach to support them through out the week.
Guest coaches took sessions across the week, including the return to camp for Lele Nairne, 2024 Olympian!
As well as judo players took part in running, team games, circuits, yoga, surfing, ending with a tug of war against all the coaches!
Great experience for our players, Eloise, Amelia and Matthew had been to the camp before, it was first time for Sam, Daisy, Mercedes and Hunter.
Hard and tiring week, they were coached by top coaches and players, had the opportunity to try new things. Worked as a team with other players they hadn’t met before!
Sam and Matthew won some of Lele’s kit, which they wore with pride and Amelia got to have a new photo with Lele to update her screen saver!
Extremely proud of all of them, they did coaches and club proud!
Huge thank you to Simon Ward, Kingsley School judo for organising another excellent event.

Let Their Dreams Begin !
An Olympic Games is the perfect opportunity to inspire a life-time love of judo.
Below you will find a link to download the above Olympic Booklet, which allows judoka to keep track of the medal winners and answer questions each day!!
For once it’s a time to get the kids in front of the TV!
Print the booklet and share it on your socials.
The booklet lets judoka
– know when the judo is on
– know which weight divisions fight on which day
There are prompts to get judoka thinking and learning
– can they spot different throws?
– which was their favourite contest of the day?
– who was the champion who most impressed them and why?
And space to record the results
– fill out the names of the eight medal winners each day
– write down their thoughts on the day’s judo
Many thanks Koka Kids for putting this together
